Brest State University named after A.S. Pushkin (BrSU) is the oldest institution of higher education in Brest Region. In 1995 Brest State Pedagogical Institute named after A.S. Pushkin based upon Brest Teacher Training Institute (which existed from 1945 till 1950) received the status of a university.

 

The status of a university has caused some qualitative changes in academic, scientific and educational work. Brest State University of today is the biggest educational institution, the center of scientific research and cultural life in West Polesye Region.

 

The university itself resides in three buildings. It has four dormitories, a sports complex equipped with a swimming pool, a library, a biological museum, an ethnographic museum, a museum of Physical training in Brest Region and a geological museum, an agro-biological station, two camps used for field practice, sports and health improvement trainings. The University 18 computer labs are connected into the local network and have access to the Internet and e-mail service providers.

 

The University's own editorial publishing department with its own printing base permits to publish textbooks, manuals and research works. The University publishes its own newspaper "Berastsejski Universitet" ("Brest University"), the scientific-theoretical journal "Vestnik Brest-skogo Universiteta" ("The Bulletin of Brest University") and annually collected scientific works "Uchyonye Zapiski of BrSU named after A.S. Pushkin" ("Scientific Notes of BrSU named after A.S. Pushkin") The overall number of books stored in the University libraries amounts to more than 800,000 volumes. All the volumes are indexed in an e-catalogue.

 

The process of education at the University is organized in three main directions: scientific, humanitarian, and pedagogical. More than 600 instructors work at 55 departments of the University, among them there are 21 doctors, 21 professors, 249 PhDs and 231 associate professors.

 

BrSU actively cooperates with the following foreign institutions of higher education: Higher Pedagogical School in Weingarten (Germany), Higher Pedagogical School in Kreuzlingen (Switzerland), University named after M.  Sklodowska-Curie in Lublin (Poland), Akademia Podli-asska in Siedlce (Poland), University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn (Poland), Siauliai University (Lithuania), Volyn State University named after Lesia Ukrainka in Lutsk (Ukraine), Institute of International Law, Economics, Humanitarian Sciences, and Management named after K.V. Rossin-ski in Krasnodar (Russia), Siberian State Aerospace University named after M.F. Reshetnikov (Russia), Krasnoyarsk State Medical Academy (Russia), the University of Leuven (Belgium), Huh-Hotto Vocational Institute (China) and others. Thanks to this cooperation the University can implement a high quality student training, meeting the modern standards.

 

Doctor (History), Professor Chasnouski Mechyslau Edvardovich was appointed Rector of Brest State University on November 5, 2002 by the order of the Ministry of Education of Belarus.
